LagosPhoto Festival
Transitions to a Biennale with its 2025 Edition
"Incarceration"

Since its inception in 2010, LagosPhoto has stood as
one of the prominent international photography
festival in Africa, forging connections between local
and global artists to showcase diverse narratives
through the lens of contemporary photography.
Following its geographic expansion to Benin in 2023,
LagosPhoto is now embracing a biennial format-
offering deeper engagement, with more time to
foster artistic growth through exhibitions, insightful
workshops, and meaningful discourse.

The 2025 edition, themed 'Incarceration', explores
various dimensions of incarceration and will uncover
the commonly understood physical imprisonment as
well as the pernicious complexities of intellectual,
psychological, and social confinement. In an era
defined by digital surveillance and entrenched
ideologies, the edition will feature visual narratives
offering a powerful reflection on present realities
while imagining bold visions of a liberated future.

For this milestone edition, the festival will engage a
team of curators living across Africa, who will both
collaborate and work independently under Azu
Nwagbogu's guidance. The curators will engage with
artists through workshops and mentorships, setting
the stage for collaboration on the 'Incarceration'
theme.

The festival will commission new works that explore
the limits of identity, thought, and space, offering
fresh perspectives on confinement and freedom,
through an open call. The selected theme
"Incarceration'-seeks visual stories that challenge
the limits imposed on identity, thought, and space,
offering new perspectives on liberation. Details of
the open call will be announced soon.
